Cabinet Hardware – The Guide to Cleaning it Right
Keeping a positive atmosphere around the house is tough, especially in the winter, but there are so many little things you can do to pick up the mood in your home. Cleaning the windows so more light can shine in, hanging brightly colored curtains or tapestries, and buying fresh flowers for the table occasionally will create a pleasant ambiance that your family will appreciate.
Another winter blues cure is keeping things clean. I don’t mean the regular upkeep of your home, but rather, getting rid of some of that grime build up that is weighing down the appearance of a room. Kitchen cabinets and kitchen cabinet hardware are breeding grounds for dirt, and over time they can create quite a following. When the weather starts to get gloomy, take out the screwdriver, and spruce up your environment by washing up those cabinets and cabinet hardware. It will take just a few minutes and will make such a difference to your surroundings. Here’s how to do it right.
Plastic, Metal and Glass Cabinet Hardware- These are the easiest cabinet knobs, cabinet pulls and cabinet hinges to clean. Simply remove from your cabinetry, and soak them in a warm water and mild soap solution. A toothbrush is the best way to break down stubborn grime build up, so if you have an old one lying around, take it out now. Rinse each piece individually when finished, and polish dry with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Use newspaper on your glass cabinet pulls and knobs for a real shine.
Wood Cabinet Hardware- Wood cabinet knobs, pulls and hinges, on the other hand, cannot be soaked in your regular soapy water solution. This is because large amounts of water will destroy the cabinet hardware, making it warp, swell or become brittle. Instead, soak a rag in the solution, squeeze it out and then rub it onto your wood cabinet hardware. You can also spray the solution onto the rag and scrub the cabinet hinges, pulls or knobs this way. If the dirt is persistent, you can use a plastic scrub brush (only plastic because steel wool and other metal brushes or sponges will scratch the finish and hardware) or a toothbrush to work it off. Dry your kitchen cabinet hardware well, and use a wood polish if the finish has come off.
Living Finishes For Cabinet Pulls & Knobs- A living finish is when the manufacturers leave the cabinet hardware unfinished so that the natural oxidation process can occur. The results are beautiful and charming and wildly popular today. Because there is no special coating as mentioned above, these cabinet knobs and pulls need to be dealt with more carefully. In general, the mild soap and water solution is still fine for this type of kitchen cabinet hardware, but care should be used when washing and polishing not to scratch the surface or rub off the natural patina that is forming (this is what gives it that lovely color). Pewter in particular is extremely soft and vulnerable. Never use anything acidic on pewter cabinet hinges, pulls or knobs, and polish this cabinet hardware gently.
Here are a few tips for homemade dirt busters and smooth sailing:
Use half of a lemon covered in salt to polish solid brass, bronze or copper.
Polish chrome or stainless steel cabinet hinges or other hardware with aluminum foil and water for an easy way to break down rust and bring out the original luster.
Keep all screws together in a bag so that none of these little items will get lost during the cleaning process. Also, remember to clean any screws that will be visible when remounted.
Paper towels are great for streak-free drying.
Do not put your kitchen cabinet hardware in the dishwasher, ever.
